Adelbert Richard Sump
July 12, 1931 – December 29, 2024
On the evening of December 29, 2024, Adelbert Richard Sump of Massillon, Ohio passed away after a short illness.
Richard was born to parents Adelbert and Olive in Cleveland, Ohio in 1931. He graduated from Collinwood High School in 1950 where he excelled in football and track. He attended Ohio University for two years where he continued to excel in football and track before joining the U.S. Air Force in 1952 where he served for four years as a teletype technician, including a tour in Japan. Upon leaving the Air Force Richard began his lifelong profession as a tool and die maker, including thirty years in the torpedo research and development division at Clevite/Gould/Westinghouse. He spent the remaining thirty years of his life enjoying retirement.
Richard was devoted to his family and regularly attended school events in support of his children. He was an excellent athlete, playing basketball and serving as a high school basketball referee for many years. His avid love for Cleveland sports teams has been passed down throughout the generations. He loved all things mechanical and tinkering around the house. His love, happy demeanor and helpful attitude will certainly be missed.
Richard was married to wife Margaret (nee Butcher) for over forty years before her passing, having met her at Ohio University. He is survived by his two children, Victoria Soster married to husband Scott and David married to wife Chris, grandchildren Brian (Layla), Holly (Keith), Daniel (Michele) and Courtney (Kyle) and great grandchildren Rebecca and Easton.
A graveside service is planned for the Spring. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the American Legion or the charity of your choice.
