Together Again. Earl "Pop" Rohr
Earl Peter Rohr, 92, of North Lawrence peacefully passed away on January 3rd, 2014 at his residence with his loving family after a long and very full life. Earl, also known as "Pop" as was his father Edwin, was born at home on Amherst Road, Jackson Township in Massillon, on May 20th, 1921 and was a descendent of the first Rohrs to settle in the Massillon area in 1848. His great-grandparents were Michael and Mary (Lenhart), grandparents Henry and Mary (Weible), parents Edwin and Cora (Frank) all of which rest in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Earl was preceded in death by his loving and beloved wife, Betty Marie Crone. Earl and Betty were married on June 13th, 1942 and enjoyed 50 years of marriage before her passing in 1992.
Earl graduated from St. Barbara Catholic grade school and then Washington High School in 1939. He was a lifelong congregational member of St. Barbara Catholic Church. Following Earl and Betty's marriage in 1942 they purchased their home farm in North Lawrence where they raised their six children.
From December 1944 - July 1946, Earl served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Japan during World War II and upon honorable discharge received two medals and two awards. After serving our country, he attended vocational agricultural training in Orrville through the veterans program.
Earl held many interests in the Ohio Forestry and Wildlife Conservation, Square Dancing and the Stark County Agriculture Society. While a member of the Stark County Agriculture Society, he was a member of the Stark County Fair Board for many years. He also entered livestock and crops for many years, for which he received awards at the Stark County Fair. He was also a member of the Soil and Water Conservation where he served as a trustee. Earl also enjoyed playing many types of cards with his dear family and friends.
Pop is survived by his six children, fourteen grandchildren, twenty-six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, all of whom loved him very much. 1) Son Bud (Mary) family members: daughter Leslie Smith (Mark) grandchildren; Jeff, Kyla, - daughter Kelly McKenzie (Joe) grandchildren; Joey, Jacob Katelynn (Thomas) great grandchild; TJ, - daughter Jamie (d 1992), - son Donald (Heather). 2) Son Dave (Patrice) (Jean Brown d. 2008)) family members: daughter Christine Olsen (Tim) grandchildren; Casey, Sean, Erin, - son Ken (Michelle) grandchildren; Casi, Tony, Molly, Amber. 3) Son Bill (Vickie) family members: daughter Amy Graber (Bob) grandchildren; Kyler, Krystian, - daughter Laurie Brennan (Don) grandchildren; Taylor, Connor, Parker, - daughter Billie Jo, - daughter Courtney Brown (Matthew) grandchildren; Braeden, Madelynn, - son Nick (Justina) grandchildren; Makenah, Landon, Elliannah. 4) Son Bob (Marty) family members: son Doug (Patty) grandchildren; Jacob, Chad, - daughter Deeanna. 5) daughter Nancy Rohr. 6) Mary Tuininga (Paul) son Don (Shannon), - daughter Karen Steff (Adam) grandchildren; Kaitlynn and Kassidy.
Deceased siblings include his brother Hubert and wife Theresa, sister Mary, and husband Russell Shanabruch.
The Rohr family wishes to express their appreciation to LifeCare Hospice of Wayne County including Kristy and Christine, and the many in-home caregivers; Sue Reynolds, Julie Plotner, Kelly Boggs, Ellen Indorf, Julie Courtney, Helen Miller, Karen Biedenbach, Barb Rohr Yoder, Debbie Hamilton Asplin.
Earl's family welcomes condolences and visitations on Friday, January 10, 2014 from 2 to 4 P.M and 6 to 8 P.M at Heitger Funeral Home - Massillon Chapel, 639 First St. N.E., Massillon, Ohio 44646. The Rosary will be prayed at 1:40 P.M. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2014 at 10 A.M. At St. Barbara Catholic Church with Revs. Brian Cline and Kevin McCaffrey celebrants. Visitation will also be held from 9 A.M. To 9:45 A.M. at the church prior to the Mass. Burial will follow at Brookfield Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Massillon Salvation Army or St Vincent DePaul at either St. Barbara Church or Sts. Phillip and James.
