Ellen E. Payne Thompson, age 87, of Jackson Township, died Friday February 3, 2023 at Aultman Woodlawn Compassionate Care Center.
She was born on Feb. 21 1935 in Cleveland OH, had lived in Mansfield and moved to the Canton area in 1972. She graduated from Ohio University with an associates degree in secretarial studies.
She spent many years as a homemaker and mother. Most of her working years were spent in Human Resources at the Stark County Welfare Department, retiring in 1996.
She attended John Knox Presbyterian Church, was an avid boater and member of Stark County Power Squadron, more recently a member of Stark County Bicycle Club, Folks on Spokes, and the Hilltop Hikers. She loved being active hiking, biking, golfing, and gardening.
Ellen is survived by her husband of 13 years, Raymond Thompson; sister Lois Hunt of Midlothian, VA; son, Glenn (Mary) Payne of San Jose CA; son, Dave (Vicki) Payne of Los Altos Hills, CA; daughter, Debra E. (Raymond) Pearsall of Hilliard, OH; and five grandchildren - Scott (Kassie) Payne of Chicago, IL; Andrew (Lindsay) Pearsall of Delaware, OH; Brendan (Lindsey) Pearsall of Dublin, GA; Meghan (Michael) Gorin of Fishers, IN; and Lia Payne of Los Altos Hills, CA; great grandson, Noah Gorin; 4 step children, Nan Trenta, Rick Thompson, Kari Brush, and Tricia Lori as well as a niece and two nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents Gordon and Mary (Cubbison) Thompson, her first husband of 47 years, Edward Payne, and her brother, Charles Thompson.
A private burial was held at North Lawn Cemetery in Canton, OH.
A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 11, 2023 at John Knox Presbyterian Church, 5155 Eastlake St NW, North Canton, OH 44720, at 2 PM. The family will receive friends an hour prior from 1 PM to 2 PM.
