James W. Smith, age 93, of Canal Fulton, passed away Monday, August 24, 2026.

He was born September 16, 1932, in Cresap, WV, the son of the late John and Dessie Lou (Goddard) Smith.

James retired from Ohio State Highway Patrol after 30 years of service. He served as Police Chief for Perry Twp. for 10 years.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

He was a member of Amherst Community Church, enjoyed golfing, and was a Massillon Tigers fan.

James is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Zande (Judy Price) Smith, Joel (Jeanne) Smith, and Kevin Smith; daughters, Caron (Marlon) Hospedales, Joanna Might; 12 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by wife of 71 years, Gloria (Parke) Smith, and nine siblings.

Funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at Heitger Funeral Home - Massillon Chapel, 639 First St. N.E. at 11:30 am with Rev. Calvin Hamblin officiating. Calling hours will be held on Saturday, August 29, 2026 prior to the service at the funeral home from 10:00 am to 11:30 am. Burial to follow the service at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens in Massillon.
