Obituary

Joseph J. Concheck, age 88 of Canal Fulton, passed away June 7, 2026. He was born May 12, 1938 in Youngstown (Lemont Furnace), Pennsylvania and resided in Canal Fulton since 1966. Joseph was preceded in death by his loving wife of 54 years, Fay Margaret, who passed away May 26, 2016. Joseph was a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather who loved his family, sports, and music.

Joseph graduated from St. John's High School in Uniontown, PA, in 1955 where he played baseball and basketball.

He graduated from Kent State University in 1960, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. Joseph played on the Kent State freshman football team and ran on the varsity cross country team. He is a member of the Kent State Varsity K club and the Alumni Association.

Following college, Joseph was drafted into the United States Army and served for two years at Fort Knox, KY. While in the service, Joseph met the love of his life, Fay Margaret Hikes of Louisville, KY. For two years, Joseph was a Special Court Martial Court Recorder for the Judge Advocate General.

He was on the Fort Knox Post Championship football team and an All Star on the Fort Knox baseball team that played in the US Army Championships in Fort Lee, Virginia.

After the military, Joseph worked at the Ford Motor Company assembly plant in Lorain, Ohio as a foreman in the body shop.

In l966, he went to the Babcock and Wilcox Company in Barberton, Ohio to work in the Nuclear Equipment Division.

Joseph was in the Project Management Contracts Department and worked on numerous contracts for Reactor Equipment for Navy Nuclear Submarines and Aircraft Carriers. He retired from B & W in 2003.

Joseph is a member of Sts. Philip and James Catholic Church in Canal Fulton. He served on the church council in the 1970's and also coached the Sts. Philip and James grade school basketball team.

Joseph was elected to the Northwest School Board and served as a member for four years in the 1970's. He is a current member of the American Legion Post #221 in Massillon, Ohio.

He was an avid sports fan and played tennis for many years and also played softball at Babcock and Wilcox and many area teams. In 1984, his team won the State of Ohio Championship in softball for 35 and over in Marietta, Ohio. His teams also won Ohio State Championships in softball for both 40 and 45 and over. Joseph was also a highly successful coach in the Northwest Youth Baseball League in the 1970's.

Joseph is survived by sons; Joe of Columbus, Ohio, and Charlie of Park City, Utah, and daughter and son-in-law, Laura and David Rector of New Franklin, grandchildren, Kara (Johnny) Vincent and Leah Concheck, Michael, and Anna Rector (Zach Hillman), great-grandchildren;Kasper Joseph and Bishop Andrew Vincent, brother; Daniel (Georgianna) Concheck of Lorain, Ohio and sister; Ruth Geierman of Lorain, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Veronica (nae Tomko), brothers; Karl, Steve, Rudy, and Louis, sisters; Irene, Wilma, Catherine Bodnar, Eleanor Glover, all of Uniontown, Pennsylvania, Sister Rose Mary O.P. of the Dominican Sister of Lancaster, PA, and sister Rita of Lorain.

The family will receive friends on Friday, June 12, 2026 from 11:00 A.M. to 12:30 P.M at Heitger Funeral Home - JACKSON CHAPEL, 5850 Wales Ave. N.W., Massillon.

Mass of Christian Burial will follow on June 12, 2026, and be held at Sts. Philip and James Church, 412 High Street in Canal Fulton at 1 P.M.

Burial will be in Canal Fulton Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Joseph's memory to Sts. Philip and James Church in Canal Fulton.
