Mark R. DeGalan, age 66 of North Canton, passed away Wednesday, January 21, 2026 at home surrounded by his family.
He was born June 3, 1959, in Flint, Michigan, the son of the late Edward and Virginia (Hittel) DeGalan.
Mark graduated from Flushing High School (Flushing, MI 1977) and received his BS in chemistry from the University of Michigan – Flint (1981), PhD in Pharmacology at University of Michigan (1986), MD from University of Miami Florida (1990), Residency and Fellowship in Radiology/Nuclear Medicine at University of Indiana (1990-1995).
He retired from the Cleveland Clinic (Mercy Hospital) after 30 years of service as a radiologist.
Mark was a member of UM Alumni Association and multiple professional organizations. Always a strategist, he enjoyed chess, military history, and grand strategy video games. He treasured his backyard fish and frog pond, UM football games (In heaven Michigan always wins - Go Blue!), and had much pride in spoiling his beloved family. As a paraplegic and cholangiocarcinoma survivor, his relentless courage and endurance inspired all. He lived with honor, grace, humor, and joy.
Mark is survived by his wife, Karen JH DeGalan; children, Luke H DeGalan, and Anna J (Kristin Vadnais) DeGalan; brothers, Edward (Susan) DeGalan Sr., and Steven (Karen) DeGalan; nephews, Jason (Lyn) and Joel Short, Edward III and Ethan DeGalan, Craig (Trisha), Neil Hamilton, and Steven Eric DeGalan; great nieces and nephews, Natalie, Annalia, Andrew, Stella Short, Morgan and Dylan Hamilton.
Visitation and memorial service will be held on Friday, January 30, 2026 at Heitger Funeral Home – Jackson Chapel, 5850 Wales Ave NW. The family is welcoming visitors at 4 pm preceding the memorial service at 5pm with Rev. Bryan George officiating. Reception to follow at La Pizzeria, 3656 Dressler Rd NW Canton. All are welcome to reminisce with family and friends.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation or to the Canton Player's Guild Theater.
