Melvin F. 'Scott' Smith, age 90, died Sunday, April 8, 2012 at Altercare of Nobles Pond.
He was born August 17, 1921 in Massillon, the son of the late Clark T and Esther E. (Karrenbaurer) Smith.
Melvin was a veteran of the Marines serving during WWII in the Pacific Theater.
He retired from Republic Steel after 45 years of service as a steel inspector.
He will be remembered as a hard working family man and devoted husband and father. One of his favorite pastimes was playing cards with his sons and grandsons.
Melvin is survived by five children, Korrin (Larry) Rashid, Cindy Spino, Scott Smith (Patty Donahue), Larry (Janice) Smith, Suzanne (Kelly) Kiefer; 10 grandchildren, Shelly, Marisa, Angela, Joe, Kristi, Scott, Ashley, Rachel, Alex, and Alyssa; 7 great-grandchildren, Maia, Trent, Brody, Sydney, Cole, Blake, and Lexi; brother, Tom J. (Eileen) Smith, Clark Jr. (Beatrice) of Henderson, NV; three sisters-in-law, Norma Smith of Florida, Jean Hammer, and 'Tiny' Karrenbaurer of Illionois, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanette (Packer) Smith, to whom he was a loving and caring husband for 58 years; brother, Laverne Smith, brother-in-law and lifelong best friend, Vincent Hammer, son-in-law, Andy Spino.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 11 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Heitger Funeral Service - Massillon Chapel, 639 First St NE.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, April 12, 2012 at St. Barbara Catholic Church, 2813 Lincoln Way West, Massillon at 1:00 PM with Rev. Thomas Cebula celebrant.
Burial at Brookfield Cemetery in Massillon.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to American Heart Association, 4682 Douglas Circle NW, Canton, OH 44718-3619, or Community Hospice, Canton 44702.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Nobles Pond for the loving and compassionate care provided to our father in the past year and also to Dr. Krishnamurthi and Dr. Tsai.
