Paul L. Hassman, 79 of Jackson Twp., passed away Saturday, August 6, 2016 at his residence surrounded by his family.
He was born in Canal Fulton on May 23, 1937 to the late Walter J. and Violet D. (Rohr) Hassman. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Donald R. Hassman.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Thelma Mae (Gantz) Hassman; three children, Diane M. Shantery of Powell, Ohio, David P. Hassman of Westerville, Deane R. (Pam) Hassman of Boardman; and two grandchildren, Amanda and Aiden Shantery of Powell.
The joy of his life was time spent with his children and grandchildren. Paul was a Certified Public Accountant and retired from AmeriTrust Bank (now KeyBank) where he was a Vice President and Comptroller. He ushered for St. Marys Church and once served on parish council. For more than the past 40 years, he has been an active member of the Massillon Knights of Columbus and Bishop Massillon Assembly 4th Degree. He was a lifetime member of the Wilderness Center in Wilmot, Ohio where he had previously served as a trustee. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army with two years of active duty and four years in the reserves and was a member of the American Legion Post 888.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 11, 2016 at Heitger Funeral Home Jackson Chapel, 5850 Wales Ave NW, from 5pm to 8pm with Knights of Columbus 4th Degree honors.
Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated by Fr. Edward Gretchko, Pastor of St. Mary Catholic Church and will be held on Friday, August 12, 2016 at St. Paul's Church, 127 Cherry Rd NE, Massillon at 11am.
Burial to follow at Sunset Hills Burial Park in Canton.
In lieu of flowers, charitable donations are suggested to the Massillon Knights Foundation at the Massillon K of C or to St. Mary Church Building Fund in Massillon.
