Raymond W. Gartland, age 84 of Massillon passed away peacefully with his family at his side on Sunday, January 27, 2013. He was born on July 3, 1928 in Youngstown, Ohio, son of the late Raymond W. and Margaret (Roach) Gartland.
He was a 1948 graduate of Washington High School and attended Ohio State and Ohio Universities. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served his country during the Korean Conflict. He retired from the N & W Railroad where he was a brakeman. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Eagles # 190, Massillon Moose, V.F.W. Post 3124 and American Legion Post 221. Ray was an avid Massillon Tiger Football fan all his life and loved the Ohio State Buckeyes. Ray was inducted in 2011 to the Greater Canton Old Timer's Fast Pitch Softball Hall of Fame.
He is survived by his sister Evelyn Getz of Strasburg, nieces Joyce Schnell of Strasburg and Susan Braucher of Jackson Twp., and nephew William Kohl of Conn. five great nieces and one great-nephew.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Regina (Kohl) Rouse and niece Peggy (Kohl) McGuire.
In keeping with Ray's wishes, private graveside services were held.
