Obituary

Richard “Hiya” J. Evans, 72

March 19, 1953 – February 10, 2026

Richard J. “Hiya” Evans, 72, of Canton, Ohio, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones, on February 10, 2026. Born on March 19, 1953, Rick lived a life full of warmth, humor, and an easygoing spirit that earned him his beloved nickname “Hiya.”

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harriett and Raymond Evans, and his siblings, Jim Evans, Barb Shankel, and Barry Evans.

Rick is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Tami Evans; his brother, Greg (Janice) Evans; his sister-in-law, Diane Evans; his children, Timothy (Alicia) Evans, Sara (Timmy) Stebler, Tonya (Larry) Chapman, and Shaun (Mary) Stephanoff; his grandchildren, Brady “Goober,” Ethan “Squirt,” Kierstynn “KitKat,” Cohen “Cone,” Reese “Cup,” and Taylor “T-Ray”; and his great-grandson, Brayden.

Rick built a long and respected career in Information Technology, where his steady problem-solving skills and willingness to help others were widely appreciated by colleagues and friends.

He had a passion for life that was evident in his many hobbies. Rick enjoyed bourbon, golf, traveling, fishing, football, baseball, and any opportunity to have a little “skin in the game.” He was a lifelong and proud supporter of The Ohio State Buckeyes, cheering on the Scarlet and Gray through the seasons with unbridled enthusiasm.

He will be remembered for his legendary sayings — “Klahoma,” “Fumble Arkansas,” “Skoal, Son,” “Can’t dance and it’s too wet to plow.” Of course, no memory of him would be complete without his famous hand tricks and his favorite word, “Doophlinquer.” He was proud to volunteer at the NEC, the WGC tournaments at Firestone Country Club, and the Pro Football Hall of Fame, where he enjoyed being part of the action and never missed a chance to talk sports with anyone who would listen. No matter the situation, he somehow had the perfect phrase (or trick) ready, whether you needed encouragement, teasing, or just a good laugh.

Though he will be deeply missed, the memories he created and the spirit he shared will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

A Celebration of Life will be held on March 19, 2026, from 6:00–9:00 PM at the North Canton Eagles Event Center, located at 6979 Sunset Strip Ave NW, North Canton, OH 44720.
