Richard J. Makowski, age 79, of Massillon died Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at Affinity Medical Center.

He was born May 7, 1932 son of the late Stanley and Bernice (Jasinski) Makowski. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served during the Korean Conflict.

Richard was a labor leader at the former LTV Steel and retired after 34 years in 1985. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and former member of American Legion and Eagles. He was a fan of the Cleveland Indians and enjoyed playing softball at the Agathon, playing euchre and traveling to Colorado and Myrtle Beach.

Richard is survived by his wife of 53 years, Gayle Makowski, sons Ed (Diane) Makowski and Rick Makowski both of Massillon, sisters Stella Kiko, Jennie Egan, Heddy Osborn, Joanne Dottavio all of Massillon and Alice Holton of Annaheim, CA, grandchildren Stefanie Ady, Melissa Schartiger, Matt and Zach Makowski, and great-grandchildren Audriana, Alaina and Jacob.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers John, Teddy and Ed Makowski.

A celebration of life memorial service will be held on Monday, February 6, 2012 at Heitger Funeral Home - Massillon Chapel at 1 :00 PM. with Rev. Edward Gretchko officiating. Visitation will be from 11 A.M. to 1 P.M. prior to the service.
