Robert L. Hammer age 92 of Lakeland, Florida, formerly of Massillon, passed away on Sunday, May 1, 2016.
He was born and raised in Massillon, Ohio, son of the late Louis and Helen (Pflug) Hammer.
Robert was a veteran of WWII where he served under General Patton 4th Armored Tank Division in Europe.
He owned and operated Hammer's Shell Station in Canton and Massillon until he retired in 1982. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Massillon and St. Anthony Church in Lakeland, Florida.
He was a member of K of C Council 554 3rd Degree and 4th Degree Bishop Massillon Assembly and St. Anthony's K of C Council in Florida, Catholic War Veterans and Catholic Order of Foresters. He enjoyed calling bingo, playing bingo and jigsaw puzzles.
Bob is survived by his friend and companion, Trudy Duhamel of Lakeland, FL; sons, Lawrence (Sue) Hammer of Jackson Twp., Chris Hammer of Florida; daughters, Laura (Daniel) McKimm of N. Canton, Leslie Gallion of IL, Lanette (Tom) Tully of North Lawrence, Michelle King and Mark McLain of Troy, NC; sister, Alice (Andy) Paul, of Massillon; thirteen grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Ruth (Feichter) Hammer; brother, Donald Hammer; sister, Mary Louise Hammer; and grandson, Thomas Tully.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, May 7, 2016 at 10 A.M. at St. Barbara Catholic Church, 2813 Lincoln Way NW, with Rev. Edward Gretchko, Pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church celebrant.
The family will receive friends from 9 to 10 A.M. At the church prior to the service.
Burial with military honors will follow at Sunset Hills Burial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Judes' Children's Hospital , PO Box 1000 Dept 142, Memphis, TN 38101-9908.
