Obituary

Walter Greenfelder, 89, of Massillon, passed away peacefully Friday, April 13th 2012.

He was born June 7, 1922 in Massillon, the son of the late Walter C. and Elmira (Berleyoung) Greenfelder.

A graduate of Massillon High School, Walter was a World War II veteran serving three years in the Army Air Force. He studies engineering at the universities of Nebraska and South Dakota under the government's selective training program and further trained as a B-29 radio operator before being shipped to Tinian Island in the South Pacific with the 20th Air Force.

Walter retired from the Massillon Steel Castings Company as a Sales Engineer and then became the Executive Director of the Barberton Chapter of the American Red Cross for ten years.

During his life Walter was involved in many community related activities including being a volunteer fireman in Jackson Township, a Junior Achievement adviser, a Red Cross volunteer, a volunteer at the Wilderness Center, an Officer in the Civil Air Patrol, a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, and a cameraman for Perry High School Football for many years. He was also a pilot having a commercial pilot rating and he was a certified flight instructor. Walter loved to hunt and fish.

He is survived by his three sons, Jeff (Charlotte) Greenfelder of Brewster, Dan (Jan) Greenfelder of North Canton, Greg (Leslie) Greenfelder of Massillon, five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and sister, Nancy Greenfelder of Lake Anna, VA.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Ralph Greenfelder and Harold Greenfelder, and sisters Betty Rohr and Rita Eberhardt.

Walter has requested that there be no calling hours or funeral services.
