Obituary

William "Bill" Burger Sr. passed unexpectedly on August 8, 2014.  He loved his family and his Jackson Township family more than words can express.     Bill lived a life dedicated to community and preservation of Jackson Township.


Bill was a Jackson High School graduate of the Class of 1954.   He was elected to the Jackson Hall of Fame in 2011 for his dedication to the Jackson Community.
Bill was a lifetime member of the Jackson Alumni Club.


Bill served his country with 24 years in the Ohio National Guard.   He retired with the rank of Captain.


Always working, Bill retired a few times.   He retired from the Jackson Township Fire Department as Assistant Fire Chief after a lengthy 25 year career.   Bill began his career as a volunteer firefighter in the 1960s.  Bill was among the first group of full-time firefighters sworn in. Bill was very proud to serve with his fellow firefighters.


After retiring from the Fire Department, he then ran for Jackson Township Trustee in 2001 and was elected to office. William served 11 years before stepping down from office in 2012.
Bill was a founding member of the Jackson Historical Society.   He was instrumental in the relocation and preservation of Jackson Center School on Fulton Road.


Bill was a volunteer of the original Jackson Fireman's Festival which then became the Jackson Community Fair; volunteering over 37 years of service.


Bill was a 25 year member and past president of the Jackson Lions Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin  Burger and Carolyn (Rohr) Haer; and former wife, Pat (Smith) Burger.


He is survived by his beloved dog, Darby; children, William Burger Jr. (Fiancée Joey Wolf) of Put-in-Bay, Marie Burger (Don) Fletcher of Canton; grandchildren, Andy, Scott, and Valerie, sisters, Rheta Burger of Tucson, AZ and Carol (George) Pousa of Tampa FL; brother, James (Tina) Burger of Grapevine TX,;  Carol Burger and her son, Eric Brandenburg.


Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 12, 2014 at Heitger Funeral Home Jackson Chapel, 5850 Wales Ave NW, at 11 AM with Rev. John Tully officiating.


Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Monday, August 11, 2014 from 5PM-8PM and on Tuesday an hour prior to the service from 10AM-11AM.


Burial to follow at Sunset Hills Burial Park in Canton.


The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff at Oakhill Manor Nursing.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Jackson Historical Society, Jackson Alumni Association or Jackson Twp Fire Department.
