Obituary

William (Bill) Edward Cunion, a man of honor, dedication, and unwavering love, passed away on February 12, 2024, at the age of 87. Born in Zanesville, Ohio, Bill spent much of his youth in Massillon, Ohio, where he worked at a local movie theater, sparking a lifelong appreciation for classic films.
After graduating from Washington High School in 1954, he embarked on a journey of service to his country, joining the military as a proud Marine for three years and later serving as an airman for eight. During his military service, Bill welcomed two daughters into the world.
Upon leaving the military, Bill married the love of his life, Karen, and returned to Massillon. He pursued higher education at Kent State University, earning a degree in English. This marked the beginning of his dedicated career as an English teacher at Timken High School, where he shared his knowledge and inspired countless students until his retirement in 1995.
Upon retirement, Bill indulged in his greatest passions: spending quality time with his ever-growing family and enjoying rounds of golf. His impact as a teacher, father, and mentor will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Throughout his life, Bill continued to expand his family, welcoming both biological and numerous foster children. His commitment to family was evident in the love and support he provided to his wife, Karen, for an enduring 59 years. Bill's legacy lives on through Karen and his children: Reyna (Tim) Hardecki, Aurora (Dan) Northrup, James (Toylene) Farrabee, William (Jesse) Cunion II, and Robyn (Scott) Lori.
Bill found immense joy in his role as a grandfather to Megan (John) McKenzie; Garrett Northrup, Megan Farrabee; Will, Jes, and Genevieve Cunion; and Samuel and Zak Lori. His great-granddaughter, Leia Nonno, brought an additional layer of happiness to his later years.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Beulah Cunion, his brother, Charles Barner, and his daughter-in-law, Kathryn Cunion.
A celebration of Bill's life will be held on Monday, February 19, at Heitger Funeral Home - Jackson Chapel, 5850 Wales Ave NW at 12:00 pm with Rev. Cecil E. Thayer officiating. Calling hours will be held an hour prior to the service from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm. Burial to follow the service at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens in Massillon with military honors. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Paralyzed Veterans of America. Bill's memory will forever live on in the hearts of those he touched, leaving behind a legacy of love, resilience, and dedication.
