August 3, 1930 – January 24, 2015
William Edgar Smeyres, "Bill" age 84, passed away Saturday, January 24, 2015 at Altercare Of Nobles Pond.
He was born August 3, 1930, in North Lawrence, the son of the late Marie and Kermit Shanklin and father, Henry Smeyres.
William is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years Jane (Braun) Smeyres; daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Don Noble of Massillon, son, Jeff Smeyres of Massillon, son and daughter-in-law Tom and Michelle Smeyres of Massillon, sister-in-law, Mary Beth Smeyres; five grandchildren, Andrea Castellanos, Chris (Ashley) Castellanos, Donivan Noble, Erika Smeyres (fiance Austin Haag), Gunnar Smeyres, and two great-grandchildren, Cadence Hope Castellanos and Austin Cookro and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Richard Smeyres, and beloved Doberman, Annie.
Bill graduated from Massillon Washington High School in 1949. He joined the U.S. Army and served in the Korean war in Verdun, France. Bill and Jane married in 1950 and lived in Massillon their entire marriage. Bill worked for Chet Keuper Contractor for fifty years in construction. He operated and owned the Amherst Coin Car Wash and owned "The Big House" apartments. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and a proud member of the choir there for forty-nine years. He also volunteered his time for the St. Vincent De Paul Society and the Nave Crew. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 221 and Knights of Columbus 3rd degree.
Bill Was a kind, loving man who loved his family and church. He was a music and animal lover and enjoyed photography. He will be missed by all who knew him and including his rescue Doberman, Zoran.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, January 27 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Heitger Funeral Service - Massillon Chapel with at Knights of Columbus 3rd degree service at 5pm.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, at 10AM with Rev. Edward Gretchko celebrant and Msgr. James Kolp con-celebrant.
Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be made to St. Mary Memorial Fund, 726 First St NE, Massillon, OH 44646 or St. Vincent DePaul, 726 First St NE, Massillon, OH 44646.
