Betty L. Shonk
Betty L. Shonk, also known to many as Grandma Betty, passed away peacefully on December 29th, 2021 at the age of 92. Betty was born to Mary and Ray Shonk on January 28, 1929 and was a proud, lifelong resident of Canton, OH - always treasuring her memories of her father’s farm. She retired from The Hoover Company in 1994, where she formed many life-long friendships. Betty devoted her later years to her family - supporting them in ways big and small, travelling across the country to share in their celebrations, and ultimately creating unforgettable memories that they will forever cherish. In her free time, she found joy in filling the home that she loved with gospel music, Ohio sports, flowers from her garden, her favorite home-made meals, and friends who would stop in to chat from near and far.
Betty’s family would like her to be remembered for who she was - a woman who exuded remarkable kindness, strength, and spirit throughout her entire life. Betty’s warmth was felt by more than just her family - she was truly “Everyone’s Grandma” - offering love, encouragement, and a helping hand to neighbors, friends, and anyone who needed it. She supported her family independently - in good times and in bad - and bravely weathered any challenge thrown her way without bitterness or contempt. Her vibrant spirit shown through until the end - she had a beautiful laugh that she shared often, loved having fun, singing, and a great joke.
We are deeply thankful for the 92 beautiful years that we had with Betty and we will always yearn for more - she leaves an enormous and unfillable hole in the hearts and lives of all those who loved her.
Betty is survived by her three children - Ronnie (late Debbie) Shonk of Navarre, Lisa (Doug) Eckroate of Canton, and Tina (Damien) Delisle of Southern California. It was one of Betty’s greatest accomplishments to see all of her children build loving partnerships and families.
Betty additionally leaves behind her two sisters (Donna Knutty, Della Myers), eight grandchildren (Tabatha, Dwan, David, April, Allie, Andrew, Jake, Jillian), six great-grandchildren (Michael, Cale, Ada, Shane, Chloe, Camilla), three great-great-grandchildren (Payton, Najee, Nisaiah), and many nieces and nephews who loved her dearly and treasured their time with her. Betty was preceded in death by her father Ray, mother Mary, step-mother Virginia, and beloved brother Ralph Shonk.
As per Betty’s wishes, a funeral service will not be held. A celebration of life for family and close friends will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in Betty’s honor to two charities that she supported during her life - the American Red Cross (Betty donated blood throughout her life) or the National Breast Cancer Foundation (Betty was a breast cancer survivor).
Please leave condolences here on our tribute wall.
