Gary L. Young
of Canton, Ohio passed away Thursday, January 28 from battling COVID-19. Gary was born 1940 in Fremont, Ohio to the late Maynard and Leona (Krawetzke) Young.
He graduated from Green Springs High School in 1958 and the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) in Kings Point, NY in 1963 with a degree in Marine Engineering. Gary played varsity basketball in high school. He also played varsity basketball while attending the Merchant Marine Academy. He sailed the world as an engineer on various merchant ships to 66 countries starting in 1960. In 1970 he retired from sailing when he obtained his Chief Engineer License in diesel and steam. Gary also marched in President, John F Kennedy’s inauguration parade while attending the Academy.
When Gary came ashore he met Carolyn, the love of his life and wife of 48 years, while working at American Electric Power as Power Plant Engineer from 1970 to 1985.
He also worked at HydroThrift Corporation in Massillon, Ohio as repair and fabrication coordinator for engineered cooling systems and heat exchangers from 1985 until to 2006 when he retired.
Gary was a Lake Cable resident for 46 years and was past president of Lake Cable Sportsman Club from 1984-1985. He helped build the picnic pavilion in the early 80's, chaired beach dances, New Year’s Eve parties, annual steak fry and other social functions at Lake Cable.
He enjoyed a special trip canoeing and fishing the boundary waters of Northern Minnesota with his son, Jeff. Gary also enjoyed perch and walleye fishing on Lake Erie and saltwater fishing during his retired winters in Sarasota, Florida.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Jeff, and daughter-in-law, Amy of Medina, Ohio, grandson, Bryce and granddaughter, Brynn, along with his sister, LaDonna Gyurica of Fremont, Ohio and niece Sharon, nephews Mike, Dave and Steve.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date.
