Martha "Sam" (Smith) Szal

Martha "Sam" Szal, age 62 of Canton, passed away Sunday, May 22, 2022 peacefully at home.
She was born November 26, 1959, in Massillon to the late Gene and Betty (Tabellion) Smith.
Sam attended St. Mary's Grade School, Central Catholic High School and was a graduate of Miami Biscayne Institute where she received her veterinary technician degree.  
Sam worked as a veterinary technician for 20 years. Following retirement, she continued working with animals and helping others through Whispering Grace Horses and Canine Therapy at local hospitals.    
She was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church and Cursillo. She was a Eucharistic Coordinator and did years of charity through the parish.
Sam is survived by her husband Brian of 20 years, children Adam (Emily) and Kristin, sisters Cathy (Doug) Baker and Rita (Mike) Madewell, numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. 
Funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 28, 2022 at 10:30 am, at St. Paul's Catholic Church North Canton with Fr. John Keener and Fr. George Szal celebrants.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, May 27, 2022 at Heitger Funeral Home, Jackson Chapel, 5850 Wales Rd. Massillon, from 5 pm to 8 pm. 
Her final place of rest will be Sunset Memory Garden.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Whispering Grace Horses or St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.
