William Baxter Young, age 80, of Canton, passed away April 29, 2022, after an extended illness.
He was born in Canton, Ohio on November 10, 1941 to William P. and Sara Maxine (Baxter) Young. Bill graduated from Canton South High School in 1959 and joined the U.S. Navy shortly after. He served with great pride and satisfaction aboard the U.S. carrier Independence and was part of the Cuban blockade during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. After his military service Bill returned to Canton and pursued a career in finance and sales for more than 30 years and retired from General Electric Credit Corporation in 2000.
Bill was a beloved husband and father. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Sharon A. Young, and his two children, Eric L. Halter (Cyndi) and Janine R. Young (David Carpenter) of North Canton, granddaughter Jordan Halter Edwards (Jared) of Tucson, Arizona, sister MaryJane Davis (Jim) of Strasburg, brother Robert P. Young of Sherrodsville, nieces and nephews Michael Davis (Jennifer) of Bolivar, Amy Mears (Kevin) of Chillicothe, Ohio; Joseph P. Young of Bamburg, Germany; Robin Harris (Ben) of Massillon, sister-in-law Sandra Nilsson (Ben) of Boulder, Colorado and niece Shelly Nilsson-Jonasen (Jeff) and their sons Ryker and Weston of Highlands Ranch, Colorado.
As an animal and nature advocate, Bill held memberships in the Audubon Society, National Parks Association, National Wildlife Society, Ocean Conservancy and other organizations devoted to preserving endangered animals and natural resources. He was also a member of American Legion Post 44, VFW, volunteered at Mercy Medical Center and attended Rivertree Christian Church. During his retirement he enjoyed nature photography, reading of historical topics, time with his dog, maintaining the plants and garden around his home, and staying in touch with his Navy buddies.
A funeral service will be held in Bill’s honor on Friday, May 6, 2022 at Heitger Funeral Home – Jackson Chapel, 5850 Wales Ave NW, Massillon at 11AM. Visitation will be from 5 PM to 7PM on Thursday, May 5, 2022 and an hour prior to the service on Friday from 10 AM to 11 AM. Final resting place will be at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery.
